Best Practices for TouchBase Photos

Employee Guidelines

These best practices for taking clear photos at the TouchBase clock ensure a successful sign-in and will reduce the likelihood or frequency of “false positive” facial recognition alerts, which are sent to your manager.

  • Stand as close to the clock as possible. Your face is the main content of the photo preview.
  • Remove hats, scarfs, sunglasses, or safety glasses. Items on or around the head may prevent the camera from capturing all edges of the face and other key data points for facial recognition.
  • Ensure your face is centered in the camera preview window.
  • Ensure that a green box displays around your face. This box signifies that the camera has detected a face in the preview.
  • Minimize movement when selecting the Go button. The camera takes the photo when you press the Go button (after inputting a badge number) or when a badge is swiped (if applicable). Movement may cause a blurriness and generation of a facial recognition alert to your manager.
  • Check the photo on the home screen for blurriness or missing parts of your face. Consider pressing the “X” button in the top right corner to cancel the punch attempt and retry the punch/photo process if necessary. This will save potential follow-up from your manager or administrator regarding any facial recognition alerts.
Note Your punch will not be submitted until you actually press an appropriate clocking button on the employee home screen (for example, Clock In or Job Transfer).

Administrator Guidelines

These best practices enable employees to provide clear and successful photos, lessening facial recognition alerts.

  • The face recognition logic looks at various characteristics of the face, primarily focusing on distances and ratios of various markers (for example, height/width of face and distance between eyes).

The optimal facial recognition results are seen when the full employee face is visible and not partially blocked by hats, scarfs, or other headwear, or distorted by glare or darkness caused by improper ambient lighting conditions.

  • Clocks should be mounted in well-lit areas, away from direct sunlight or spot lighting/glare. The clock does not have any flash or lighting enhancement, so the photo quality is entirely dependent on ambient lighting. Photos that are too light or too dark will lead to higher frequency of false positive facial recognition alerts.

Photos that are too dark are expected to have a higher rate of false positive facial recognition alert, due to the facial markers being obscured or unclear.

Photos that are too light, due to direct sunlight or heavy spot lighting, cause the edges and other areas of the face to be washed out or blend into the background.

  • Clocks should be mounted in accordance with any local regulations (for example, disabled access). Suggested heights, measured from floor to bottom of back panel, are:
    • 39.5 inches for ADA compliance
    • 46.5 inches to capture the majority of the user population

For more information, see the UKG TouchBase Gen6 Installation Guide.

  • Facial recognition works by comparing photos with a “facial model” that is a composite of prior employee punch photos. Best results are seen when employees have at least 25 prior punch photos in the system.
