Accessibility in Recruiting: Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some common questions about accessibility in Recruiting.

How does Recruiting help ensure that my job boards are accessible to applicants with disabilities?
Recruiting includes many enhancements designed to make its job boards more accessible, to better accommodate:
  • Applicants who use screen readers to access your job boards.
  • Applicants who access your job boards using only a keyboard.
  • Applicants with visual impairments.
What is WCAG?
Published by the World Wide Web Consortium, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) is a standard that provides recommendations for making Web content more accessible to people with disabilities.
Does Recruiting comply with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)?
With the improvements in the September 2020 release, the job boards in Recruiting are compliant with WCAG 2.0 Level AAA. We're working to bring the rest of Recruiting (as used by Recruiters, Hiring Managers, and Administrators) into compliance in a future release.
Where can I find details about how Recruiting and its job boards conform to the specific accessibility standards in Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act?
The Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) is a document that outlines these details. The VPAT for Recruiting is still in progress. Look for it in the Fall of 2020, in the Recruiting online help and in the Learning Center.
What is the AODA?

The Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) is a law that establishes accessibility requirements for both public and private sector organizations that operate in the Canadian province of Ontario. The AODA sets the goal of making the province completely accessible by 2025. The law requires website compliance with most of the WCAG 2.0 Level AA criteria by the end of 2020. Violations can lead to financial penalties.

Because the accessibility updates in Recruiting's job boards meet the WCAG 2.0 Level AA standard, the job boards are compliant with the AODA.

Do I need to update the Accessibility Message banner on my job boards?
With the accessibility improvements in the August 2020 release, you no longer need to display the Accessibility Message banner on your job boards. However, if you offer assistance with your application process, you can continue to use the banner to notify your applicants. You can configure the banner in Settings > Accessibility.
So that's it? Accessibility mission accomplished?
We're dedicated to ensuring that our products are accessible, and to improving the user experience for all users. It's an ongoing process—one that changes as new technologies emerge. We're already working toward compliance with WCAG 2.1.
What is the role of assistive technologies?
Assistive technologies are designed to improve or maintain the functional capabilities of people with disabilities. There are various assistive technologies available, including tools like adapted pencil grips and automatic page turners; and cognitive aids, such as electrical assistive devices, created to help memory skills. In terms of Web accessibility, assistive technologies can help ensure the individual can use the internet and Web-based content. Some examples include:
  • Mouth stick: a simple device that users can manipulate with their mouths to type or control with a mouse.
  • Head wand: a simple device strapped to the user's head that enables them to type, navigate, and otherwise maintain control over Web services.
  • Oversized trackball mouse: a device that lets users move their cursor easily, despite fine motor movement limitations.
  • Adaptive keyboard: a popular technology featuring raised areas in between keys to help slide the finger onto the correct key.
  • Voice recognition software: software that enables users to control Web services with simple voice commands.
