Time zones in Workforce Management Classic help the system correctly work with partial day time off, schedules, and punches. Assigning an employee a time zone is not required when the employee will only use Time Off, but not Time Classic or Scheduling Classic.
If an employee is not assigned a time zone, the company time zone from the company settings in Time Off and Time Classic is used when working with punches, timesheets, and schedules.
Timesheets are recorded keeping the employee’s time zone in mind, so changing the employee’s time zone after data is generated will change how that data is viewed. For example, if an employee is scheduled for 9-5 in Eastern time but is later changed to Pacific time, the schedule on the timesheet will show 6-2.
Likewise, when entries are made on a time entry timesheet, or punches on a time clock timesheet, the times entered are interpreted using the employee’s time zone. This helps generate accurate duration calculations, and it also prompts for extra information when a punch or entry is ambiguous due to daylight savings time. For example, a punch at 2:30 a.m. on the “fall back” day needs clarification whether it’s the “first” or “second” 2:30 a.m. in order to generate correct pay.
Scheduling teams are assigned a time zone, and schedules are created according to that time zone.
Important:
The schedule time zone isn’t necessarily the same time zone an employee works in, so this area requires extra caution.
If a scheduling team is set to Eastern time and an employee is scheduled to work 9-5, that means 9-5 Eastern time, even if the employee's home time zone is different. If that same employee were assigned to Pacific time at the employee level, the employee's schedule would show 6-2.
When punches are imported via CSV, they may include the time zone as part of the time stamp, according to ISO8601 formatting. However, punches can be specified without a time zone; the punches are assumed to be in the employee’s time zone.
